Dust and fume extraction for metalworking

  • Welding
  • Cutting
  • Grinding
  • Machining

Metalworking includes a wide range of manufacturing processes, from welding and cutting to grinding, machining and finishing.

These operations can create airborne dust, fine particles and fumes that need to be captured close to the production process.

Because the type of contamination varies between processes, the extraction solution needs to be designed around the specific application.

NEU-JKF Nordic supplies filters, fans and duct systems for industrial extraction and can support both individual equipment requirements and larger system solutions.

Welding

Welding generates fumes and fine airborne particles.

The extraction system should be designed to capture these emissions close to the point where they are generated.

The layout of welding stations and the way operators work can influence how extraction is integrated into the production area.

Cutting

Different cutting processes can generate dust, particles or fumes depending on the material and technology involved.

Local extraction can help prevent these emissions from spreading into the surrounding production environment.

Grinding

Grinding often creates fine metallic particles and dust.

Because grinding can generate material at high speed, extraction needs to be positioned and dimensioned appropriately around the process.

Machining

Machining operations vary considerably.

The extraction requirement depends on the type of machine, material and process.

For that reason, equipment selection should be based on the actual application rather than a general metalworking configuration.

Local extraction

Capture close to the process

The earlier dust and fumes can be captured, the less opportunity they have to spread throughout the production environment.

This makes local extraction design an important part of the overall system.

Once captured, contaminated air is transported through the ductwork to filtration equipment.

Fans provide the required airflow, while the filter separates particles from the air.

The system therefore needs to be considered as a complete airflow path.

Filtration

Filters for industrial extraction

The appropriate filtration technology depends on the specific material and process.

Bag filters and cartridge filters can both be relevant in industrial applications.

The selection should reflect factors such as particle characteristics, airflow and operating conditions.

Rather than choosing a filter independently, it should be selected as part of the complete extraction system.

Airflow

Fans and airflow

A fan does more than simply move air.

It needs to overcome the resistance created by ductwork, filters, bends, dampers and other components.

If the fan does not match the system correctly, extraction performance can be affected.

Fan selection should therefore be based on the required airflow and pressure at the actual operating point.

Integration

Integration with existing production

Many extraction projects take place in factories that are already operating.

This means new equipment often needs to integrate with existing machines, duct routes and extraction components.

The available space can also be limited.

For these projects, flexibility in component selection and system layout becomes particularly important.

NEU-JKF Nordic equipment can form part of both new and existing installations, allowing customers to upgrade or extend their extraction systems without necessarily replacing every component.

Operation

Reliability and maintenance

Industrial extraction systems are often expected to operate alongside production for long periods.

Maintenance access therefore needs to be considered during system design.

Filters, fans, rotary valves and other components should be positioned so they can be inspected and serviced without unnecessary disruption.

The goal is to create a system that not only performs when it is installed but can also be operated practically over time.
